If we write but one book in life, let it be our autobiography... I will not be so presumptuous as to infer that the words which follow is an autobiography; but rather a framework for a life's story that one day I may write...

The Last Decade: An Autobiographical Sketch

by Winfield Weston

1922-1932

The first decade... Not a bad time at all... Of course, I was real young, but I remember having a good time, starting school, making friends... And then there were delightful summers at my grandmother's cottage at Forrest Lake... Playing in the fields, swimming in the lake... I had a great many friends... Small town living at its best... But on the downside, this was the beginning of the Great Depression...

1932-1942

This decade was probably the most important one for me... During these years, for better or worse, I managed to set a course for the rest of my life... Some of these years were lean years, the depression years... But we got through OK... The school years... I wasn't a particularly good student, but I did well somehow... Sports and girls, not necessarily in that order... An abundance of loyal friends, most of whom were smarter and better behaved than me, helped me through this decade... And then BAM! The war started, and I began my Navy career...

1942-1952

These were tough years, not only because of me being in the Navy, but having a lot of trouble trying to define who I was and what I wanted to do with my life... Obviously, I was away from home a lot, at sea, and doing what thousands of others were doing -- surviving...

During the early part of this decade, with a lot of help from various sources, I finally got on track... Good years, for the most part, but marred by the death of my beloved daughter, Pennie...

Decisions I made during this decade were excellent... Was I getting wiser, or what? The decision to retire from the Navy and go to college was definitely a turning point in my life... After retirement and college we moved to Washington where I finished my civil service career... With Jeanne as my devoted partner, and both of us in interesting jobs, we truly enjoyed ourselves... We got to travel a great deal, broadening our perspective of the world and the people in it...

bullet¡Nada!

1992-2002

I'm convinced this is the last decade... Not so much because of health problems, but rather because I've lived so long... After all, enough's enough... I've enjoyed most things I've done during my lifetime... On balance, the good has outweighed the bad... By quite a bit... I do believe, though, I should have contributed more to my family and other folks... Maybe I'll be able to do some of that before the end... We'll see...

2002 to 2012

Well, I missed the mark... I certainly thought 1992-2002 would be my last decade, but here I am stumbling along in 2003, creeping and crawling... Surviving... Actually, I'm doing rather well considering my recent health problems... Think positive, Winfield... You are in the bonus years!
